After tons of rumors and leaks, Huawei has finally launched its latest flagship smartphone Mate 9. While the smartphone has overall design quite similar to its predecessor Mate 8 including the premium metallic build, it’s USP is that it is powered by Huawei’s latest Kirin 960 chipset and features Leica-branded dual rear camera setup.

Starting with Kirin 960, it’s the latest flagship chipset from Huawei and an upgrade over last year’s Kirin 950. It is an octa-core processor with four 2.4GHz Cortex-A73 cores and four 1.8GHz Cortex-A53 cores. It’s accompanied by the latest Mali-G71 GPU which Huawei claims to offer 180% graphic performance improvement. The processor is coupled with 4GB RAM.

Coming to the dual rear camera setup in the partnership with Leica, it comprise of a 20MP monochromatic sensor and a 12MP RGB sensor with f/2.2 aperture and OIS. It also features phase detection and laser autofocus with 2x digital zoom. The camera setup is also said to offer great bokeh effect in photos with the ability to adjust focus even after clicking them. As for taking selfies, there is an 8MP front shooter with f/1.9 aperture.

Talking about other specifications, the Huawei Mate 9 sports a 5.9-inch Full HD IPS display. It comes with 64GB storage and supports microSD card expansion up to 256GB. The whole package is powered by a 4000mAh battery with Huawei’s own Super Charge fast charging tech. It is said to offer a day’s charge within 20 minutes.

On the software front, the Mate 9 will be shipping with EMUI v5.0 based on Android Nougat v7.0. It features EMUI machine learning which, as per Huawei, will analyze user’s usage habits and prioritize apps and services based on that analysis.

Huawei has released the Mate 9 in Black, Space Gray, Moonlight Silver, Champagne Gold, Mocha Brown, and Ceramic White color variants. It has been priced at €699 (Rs. 51, 839/$776) with availability in China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Kuwait, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, and the UAE while other countries will follow later.
