Bharti Airtel has announced a partnership with Karbonn Mobiles under which it is offering the Karbonn A40 Indian 4G Android smartphone at an effective price of Rs. 1399. This deal is a part of Airtel’s Mera Pehla 4G Smartphone initiative which is also known as My First Smartphone. Under this, it will be teaming up with various smartphone makers to offer 4G smartphones at a much affordable price to take on the rival Jio’s JioPhone which is effectively available for free.
The Karbonn A40 Indian smartphone was originally launched earlier this year and is said to have a market price of Rs. 3499. As for the Airtel initiative, a user will have to make a down payment of Rs. 2899 to get his hands on the smartphone. After this, he will need to do recharges of at least Rs. 3000 within 18 months of the purchase to get Rs. 500 refund. If the user continues to do recharges of Rs. 3000 for next 18 months, he will get another refund of Rs. 1500. This will eventually bring down the cost of the smartphone to Rs. 1399 which is what the company is promoting in the marketing campaign.
While the user will be free to do these recharges in any denomination of his choice, Airtel is also offering an optional bundle of Rs. 169. As per this bundle, the user will get unlimited voice calling (with fair usage policy applied) and 0.5GB 4G data per day for a period of 28 days. If a user chooses this bundle, he will have to do recharges of Rs. 169 for 36 months to claim the full refund of Rs. 1500.
In terms of specifications, the Karbonn A40 Indian sports a 4-inch touchscreen display with a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels. Under the hood, it has the quad-core processor clocked at 1.3GHz and coupled with 1GB of RAM. It offers 8GB of internal storage with microSD card support. There is a 2-megapixel rear camera with LED flash and a 0.3-megapixel VGA front camera. The whole package is powered by a 1400mAh battery and it runs Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box. It features support for 22 Indian languages and was launched in Blue, Coffee Brown, Black, Champagne, and Red color options.
When compared with the JioPhone, Karbonn’s offering is a fully-fledged Android smartphone which means it runs Google Play Store and is capable of running most of the commonly used apps like WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube among others. It will be made available for purchase across all leading stores in the country and after sales support will be handled by Karbonn. This condition will hold true for all smartphone makers which will tie up with Airtel in the future. Another major difference is that Airtel says a user will not be asked to return the smartphone to get the refund which means the user will possess complete ownership of the device.
